PROGRAM THEMES

The overall goals of the Stem Cell and Hematologic Malignancies Program are to link the basic biology of hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells with therapeutic stem cell transplant and hematologic malignancy clinical trials. Coordinated research efforts within each of the scientific focus areas of this Program address the following specific aims:

  • Stem Cells and Transplantation
    • To determine the critical signaling pathways in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and in immune effector cells
    • To develop mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation strategies as new therapy for malignant diseases
    • To develop umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation as an alternate HSC source for treating hematological malignancies
  • Hematologic Malignancies
    • To define stem cell failure processes leading to myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemias in terms of defects in DNA repair mechanisms and clonal evolution
    • To develop novel therapeutics for hematologic malignancies
  • Developing Initiative: Immune Cell Biology and Therapeutics
    • To develop a basic and translational approach to immune-mediated anti-cancer therapies

FOCUS AREAS

The Program is organized into two scientific focus areas, with a third initiative in development. The basic biology efforts focus on stem cell proliferation, transplantation and differentiation modulation by signal transduction, intercellular interactions and alterations in gene expression, and use animal models and analysis of human samples of normal and malignant hematopoietic cells. The Hematologic malignancies focus area is focused on the clinical treatment of leukemias, lymphomas, myelomas, and myelodysplastic syndromes. The immune cell biology initiative is developing a cancer immunology focus from an existing strong base of immunobiology. This area links basic immunology with research into cell based immunobiology, adoptive cell therapy, cell based cancer vaccines, and innate immunity. It is aimed toward development of cellular anti-tumor immunotherapy and exploration of novel methods for treating GVHD in the course of allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
