Services

The Behavioral Measurement Shared Resource supports clinical, prevention and other cancer research by assisting investigators in behavioral research methods including identifying or adapting existing measures of behavioral constructs or when needed, developing new measures to fit investigator research questions and hypotheses. The core faculty have expertise in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods study designs. More specifically, the core supports the following services:

  • Consultation on measurement options and study design
    • Guide selection of existing measures
    • Assist development of new measures
  • Behavioral measurement expertise is available for project and grant development
  • Assistance with planning, collection and analysis of:
    • Behavioral measure data
    • Qualitative data
    • Mixed methods data
  • Assistance in the preparation of behavioral data for presentation or publication
  • Access to a library of existing behavioral measures relevant for cancer research (see links below)

The Behavioral Measurement Shared Resource provides measurement expertise to streamline the research process, reduce turnaround time for grant development, and ensure sound behavioral methodologies are implemented. These services are available to all members of the Cancer Center but are particularly relevant for investigators engaged in epidemiological, clinical, or prevention and control research.

Resources

Two databases of measures are also available. These databases allow investigators to search for behavioral measures that may be suitable for their projects. The database provides information about the measure, key references, and copies the measure when available. The links below are to the Behavioral and Primary Care databases.

Primary Care Measures

The Core faculty have access to a variety of software programs to facilitate measurement and qualitative analysis. In some instances, macros and valuable freeware are available for investigators to use on their own.

The Core also has some measurement devices available for collecting behavioral data:

Physical activity monitors - Accelerometers
Global Positioning System (GPS) units
