Lab of: Mark W. Jackson, PhD
Department: Pathology
Postdocs Needed: 1
Research Themes: Common defining characteristics of human cancer cells are their insensitivity to anti-proliferative signals and their acquisition of immortality. Research in my lab utilizes in vitro models of human mammary epithelial cell (HMEC) transformation, whereby known genetic events involved in HMEC transformation are replaced by "random" genetic events, introduced using novel insertional mutagenesis lentiviruses. This approach provides new and exciting avenues to identify signaling changes that contribute to the early stages of breast hyperplasia. An appropriate candidate will have obtained a PhD recently, have a strong background in cancer cell biology or signal transduction, and be experienced with tissue culture and molecular biology techniques. Interested individuals should send their curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of three references to:

Lab of: Shirley M. Moore, PhD, RN
Department: Nursing
Postdocs Needed: 1
Research Themes: Vulnerable Populations with Multiple Morbidities
These 2-year training programs prepare nurse scientists who are equipped to study the complex systems comprising and influencing the health of vulnerable populations with multiple morbidities. This innovative training program is based on complexity theory and emphasizes mixed methods and team approaches to conducting inquiry. With the guidance of a strong research mentorship program, fellows learn design and analytic approaches that stem from theoretical frameworks that reflect the complexity of humans and health. Our goal is to prepare a cadre of nurse scientists who are committed to the elimination of health disparities through the development of knowledge about the complex systems comprising and influencing the health of vulnerable populations.
Candidates for the training programs can be enrolled in our fast-track BSN to PhD program, our traditional and summer PhD programs, and in postdoctoral training.

Lab of: John J. Pink, PhD
Department: General Medical Sciences - Oncology
Postdocs Needed: 1
Research Themes: Research in my lab is focused on understanding mechanisms by which breast cancer cells lose their dependence on estrogens for growth. Two small calcium binding proteins, calgranulin A and calgranulin B, have been shown to be highly elevated in breast cancer cell lines selected to grow in the absence of estrogens. This finding has been supported by clinical studies showing a strong correlation between lack of estrogen receptor-alpha expression and calgranulin expression. This project will include investigations into the molecular signaling responsible for elevated calgranulin expression and the downstream effects of elevated expression of the calgranulins. Additional studies employing insertional mutagenesis to identify genes associated with the development of estrogen independence have recently been initiated and will be a significant component of the project. Complementary studies on clinical specimens will be integrated into the basic laboratory studies. As Scientific Director of the Translational Research Core Facility of the Cancer Center, I interact with numerous investigators leading various cancer based clinical trials and therefore the person filling this position will have a unique opportunity to interact with a wide variety of clinical investigators on translational research projects. Appropriate candidates should have experience in cancer cell biology, endocrinology and molecular biology, and have obtained a PhD or MD degree within the past 4 years.
