About the Program

This research-oriented program is for clinicians interested in developing careers as independent and highly collaborative investigators conducting practice-based network research. This 2-3 year program is supported by an R25 training grant from the National Cancer Institute, the first NIH-funded training program to develop PBRN researchers. Candidates come from the fields of primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, general internal medicine), dentistry, and doctorally-prepared advance practice nurses.

The fellowship involves the following:

  • 80% mentored research time working with several highly productive practice-based research networks.
    • 50% time will be spent conducting your own research project and career development in the broad areas of cancer prevention and control.
    • 30% time will be spent working with network practices on practice-initiated research projects.
  • The remaining 20% time will be spent in clinical work in network community-based practices.

Local closely affiliated PBRNs include the Research Association of Practices (RAP), which conducted the Direct Observation of Primary Care Project and the STEP-UP community clinical trial, among others. RAP includes independent family practices, a network of safety net practices, and primary care practices affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland. The country's first large dental practice PBRN and the Rainbow Pediatric PBRN provide a wealth of cross-disciplinary research opportunities. These networks engage in collaborative research with other regional and national networks.

Fellow appointments are in the Family Medicine Department at Case Western Reserve University, which is an equal opportunity employer, and provides a rich training and research environment. The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center supports this fellowship through a PBRN research-enabling shared resource which is led by James Werner, PhD. Collaborative research and training opportunities are facilitated by Kurt Stange, MD, PhD, who serves as principal investigator for this training program. At the completion of the fellowship, fellows will be uniquely equipped for careers working with PBRNs to conduct funded, rigorous and relevant practice and community-based research.

Faculty appointments are possible for qualified candidates. The training program, with an excellent benefits package, provides a salary of $75,000 per year.

Interested candidates should send a Curriculum Vitae and letter of interest to James Werner at james.werner@case.edu
